On Saturday 7 November 2026, the Palazzo Comunale in Montepulciano will host the study day "L'identità ritratta agli albori del Seicento", devoted to Italian portraiture between the end of the sixteenth century and the early decades of the seventeenth century, with particular attention to Caravaggesque and early Caravaggesque contexts. The meeting revisits and expands on the in-depth studies of the Ritratto di gentiluomo in nero held at the Museo Civico di Montepulciano and broadens the discussion to the theme of identity as represented through portraiture: what a person's choice of how to be painted said about them, and how that language changed in Italy between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The day is promoted by the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano together with the Comune di Montepulciano, with the participation of the Museo Civico Pinacoteca Crociani.
